Diaper rash is likely to occur sometime during their first three years and It is most commonly seen in babies at 6-8 months of age. The primary cause of diaper rash is prolonged and increased exposure to wetness/moisture to the skin.

There’s a wide variation in what diaper rash looks like.

The following is a summary of the symptoms you might see if it is a diaper rash:

  • Pinkness or redness over a small or large area, wherever the diaper touches

  • Dry raised bumps (papules) Fluid-filled raised bumps (pustules)

  • Dryness or peeling/scaling of the skin Raised areas (edema, or swelling)

  • Affected areas may be warm to the touch

Other Rash Symptoms:

Yeast Infection
A yeast infection typically appears in places where it is warm and moist such as the folds of the skin. It usually presents as a deep red rash with white scales and lesions outside the diaper area, or satellite lesions.

Psoriasis
Though rare, Psoriasis can occur in infants. It presents as red thickened skin with silvery scales that may be itchy or sore and is typically located on the legs, arms or scalp.

Impetigo
Appearing as yellow brownish crusty patches and/or pus-filled blisters. It is generally located on the buttocks, lower abdomen and thighs. If your baby shows any of these symptoms be sure to call your pediatrician.

With correct and consistent treatment, diaper rash should clear up within 7 days. If your baby’s rash worsens or does not clear up in 7 days be sure to call your pediatrician.
