How to Treat Diaper Rash

Diaper rash can cause a lot of discomfort for your little one and you want to help them feel better fast. With PENATEN® medicated products and a little tender loving care, you can soothe your baby while helping to heal and protecting from recurrence at the same time. Three important steps can help bring diaper rash under control—gentle cleansing, ensuring the skin is dry, and protecting the skin from further irritation.

1. CLEAN YOUR BABY’S SKIN

Do your best to keep baby’s skin clean and dry. That means changing wet or soiled diapers right away. It’s not always easy to know when your baby needs a change, so be sure to check the diaper at least once every two hours. For newborns or babies with diaper rash and/or diarrhea, check even more frequently.

For diaper changes, be sure to choose gentle wipes that are designed to suit your baby’s special needs. Your best choices are wipes that have been clinically tested or proven mild to the skin.

A soft, wet washcloth can also provide a simple solution to gently clean the diaper area. Warm water should do the job; use a gentle baby cleanser only if the stool does not come off easily.

Whether using wipes or a washcloth, do your best to avoid further irritating damaged skin. Use your wipe or washcloth to gently pat skin, don’t rub.

If you’ve already applied a diaper rash treatment at the previous diaper change, don’t worry about removing any leftover cream. Clean the soiled, outer layer and leave the ointment on the skin to avoid damaging delicate skin as it heals.

2. ALLOW DIAPER AREA TO DRY

Once you have finished cleaning your baby’s bottom, pat it dry (remember, don’t rub!) before you apply a thick barrier of protection. Better yet, allow your baby to go without a diaper for a little while to let their bottom air-dry and apply a thick barrier of protection before putting another diaper on.

3. PROTECT FROM FURTHER DAMAGE

Finally, apply one of the PENATEN® diaper rash treatments to protect baby’s skin.

Applying the cream creates a barrier that protects the skin from further damage awhile creating a more optimal environment to allow the irritated skin to heal. It also helps prevent friction caused by the diaper.

At each diaper change, apply a thick layer of a zinc oxide diaper rash treatment, like PENATEN® Medicated Cream or PENATEN® Creamy Medicated Diaper Rash Treatment, to soothe and protect your baby’s irritated skin.

PENATEN® Creamy Medicated Diaper Rash Treatment instantly forms a protective layer on your baby’s skin and glides on easily to help soothe and relieve rash discomfort.
